Mothers Matter
When all mothers matter, every woman in every corner of the world will have access to safe pregnancies and deliveries, ensuring healthier mothers, children and families – and more vibrant communities and countries.
More than 500,000 women die every year from complications during pregnancy and childbirth – that’s one woman dying nearly every minute of every day. Maternal mortality is nothing short of an epidemic. Yet we don’t have to wait for a medical breakthrough to save women’s lives. We know how to prevent nearly all maternal deaths today.
The solutions include:
- Skilled care during pregnancy and birth
- Quality emergency obstetrical care
- Immediate post-partum care for the mother and newborn
- Voluntary family planning education, information and services
- The financial resources and political will to continue to make progress
What CARE is doing
As an organization that fights global poverty by promoting women’s empowerment, CARE has made reducing maternal mortality one of our key priorities, which is why we've created the Mothers Matter program.
By building on CARE’s 50 years of experience in maternal and child health, and working with a global coalition of public and private partners, CARE has committed to making pregnancy and delivery safer for 30 million women in Africa, Asia and Latin America by 2015.
We know that the optimal solutions are comprehensive, community-based approaches. The Mothers Matter program is addressing maternal, newborn and children’s health while also focusing on sexual and reproductive health, family planning, nutrition, economic empowerment, education and HIV and AIDS.
