International Women's Day

Half the Sky LIVE

"It is impossible to stand by and do nothing."
-George Clooney

We would like to thank everyone who joined our presentation of Half the Sky LIVE across Canada!

From Halifax to Vancouver, Canadians came out to learn more about women and girls' issues in advance of International Women's Day. Now that you've seen the film, learn more about International Women's Day and what you can do to take action!

The film event featured a documentary directed by Oscar-winning actress Marisa Tomei and Lisa Leone that was taken from the pages of the best-selling book Half the Sky. The documentary detailed the life of Woineshet, who was abducted and sexually assaulted at the age of 13. With her father's help, Woineshet stood up against this "accepted" practice in her community and fought the perpretrators and the law, eventually making the practice illegal in her country.

The documentary was followed by a celebrity panel, which included Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, Maria Bello and Nicholas Kristof. Musical performances included India.Arie, Diane Birch and Angelique Kudjo.

A special thank you to Sonja Smits and Codi Jeffries, who hosted the Ottawa event, and to Sarah Slean, who hosted the Toronto event.
