This child lives in Thone Gua village in Kuan Chan Gon. He is two years old. He is now afraid of wind. He finds a place to hide when it is windy. He asks his parents whether there will be another storm.

Ma Lwin, 35, and her son, Win Lwin Oo , 11, lost the rest of their family members (husband, two daughter and two sons) and their house in the cyclone. They are seen standing with other survivors at the monastery where they have taken shelter.

CARE provides seeds for the farmers in the area that allow them to gain sufficient income to survive. CARE also facilitates land certification for the community. Now, around 134 household, inhabitants of the village, many of whom are refugees from East Timor, has certificate for the plot of land they have been working on for decades.

CARE’s is also aiming to reduce malaria infection in West Timor. The prevention and control of malaria among pregnant and lactating women is addressed by rehabilitating malnourished children by supplementary feeding programs as well as teaching families how to sustain their children’s enhanced nutritional and health status.

The Therapeutic Feeding Centre in Belu is one of three in the West Timor. With the capacity of 20 children, the centre is always full or exceeds capacity. Due to severe malnutrition, 10 children had died in the centre only few days after initial treatment in the past year.

Across West Timor, one of the poorest provinces in Indonesia, more and more children are living on the edge. Insufficient rains and locusts caused by El Niño destroyed crops across the region this year, leaving some families with barely 25 per cent of their expected harvests.
